History of WCRCThe WCRC is unique in Minnesota and in the country. We
are a grassroots, nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to focus on the needs of
women living with cancer and on the prevention of cancer for future generations. We are
committed to addressing cancer as a community issue which affects us all.
The Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) was
founded by Barbra Wiener, who had the vision of a center where women with all types of
cancer could get support and advocacy, as well as information about the prevention of
cancer through environmental awareness. Barbra's dream began after the loss of both her
mother and her sister to breast cancer, and after her personal journey with thyroid
cancer.
Her dream became a reality when WCRC was
incorporated in July 1993. Currently, our Board of Directors consists of 5 women who have
had experience with cancer in their lives, either through their own diagnosis or that of a
friend or family member.
For our first two years, we were housed in
donated space in the downtown Minneapolis YWCA. In the summer of 1996, we moved into an
office located at Minneapolis, which includes a consultation room for client discussions,
a support group room and an expanding library. In 2000, we were able to purchase and
move into our present space at 4604 Chicago Avenue South located in South Minneapolis.
We new space consists of a library, office space, support group meeting
rooms, and an additional meeting room.
The services we offer are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL
for all whose lives have been touched by cancer. Our primary goals are threefold:
information, support and advocacy.
