Holistic Care

If you or a loved on has been diagnosed with cancer, you may find yourself confused about treatment options. These resources can help you make informed, intelligent treatment decisions that consider all available options.

The resources are listed here as a service to the community to help facilitate informed searches. WCRC does not endorse any particular practitioner or treatment modality. All the information/counseling services described below are independent fee-for-service organizations. In most cases, you will be able to obtain a report within a few days of your request.

The Health Resource, Inc.
CANHELP
The Alternative Therapy Program
Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D.
Special Report: Integrating Complementary and Alternative Therapies

The Health Resource, Inc., telephone 800-949-0090, www.thehealthresource.com
This research organization was established as a result of director Janice R. Guthrie's bout with ovarian cancer. Guthrie's research was so important in helping her regain a sense of control over her health that she decided to do similar research as a service for others with medical problems. Clients receive an individualized, comprehensive research report on their type of cancer with information on the latest treatment options worldwide--both conventional and alternative--and on current research, self-help measures, specialists, and resource organizations. The report includes profiles of cancer patients with the same type of cancer who have either recovered or well outlived their life expectancy.

CANHELP, telephone 800-565-1732,  www.canhelp.com
CANHELP was founded by Patrick M. McGrady, Jr., medical writer and co-author of the Pritikin diet book. He offers to help guide the client through "the maze of claims, counter-claims and put-downs regarding conventional and alternative therapies." CANHELP's individualized report includes a computer printout of relevant research and treatment information from medical data banks with a personal interpretation for the client and her physician.

The Alternative Therapy Program, telephone 515-972-4444 http://www.peopleagainstcancer.com
Developed by the nonprofit People Against Cancer to provide unbiased information and counseling on nontoxic cancer therapies, this program is based on the belief that people with cancer have two fundamental rights--the right to know and the right to choose. They act as an advocate in directly consulting with select physicians and researchers worldwide. These experts report on their past results with the type of cancer concerned and describe their therapy. In some cases they provide the name and telephone number of someone they have treated for a similar cancer at a similar stage.

Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D., telephone 800-980-1234, www.ralphmoss.com
Dr. Moss, former assistant director of public affairs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, offers assistance in assessing the usefulness of conventional treatments for the client's type of cancer, evaluating alternative methods and practitioners and finding resources. Dr. Moss has spent the last 20 years investigating and writing about cancer issues. His book, Questioning Chemotherapy, is, so far as he knows, the first book written about the failures as well as the successes of chemotherapy.
