connection between cancer and the environment. Every day the scientific community is
learning more about the role of environment in the incidence of cancer. Yet every day, our
water and air are polluted by massive amounts of industrial waste. Our homes and gardens
are poisoned by pesticides, fertilizers and cleaning products. Our exposure to toxic
chemicals continues.
To fully understand cancer, we need to
acknowledge and fully explore the role of environmental insults. We need to speak out
against the presence of substances that contaminate our food, our water, and the air we
breathe.

environment -- and what you can do to bring about change -- visit the Act section of this Web site.
Toxic
Industry Tour a success!
The WCRC Environmental Activism Group toured some of the metro area's more toxic
industries by bus on Friday, October 13, 2000.
This tour was inspired by San Francisco's
Breast Cancer Action group, which has held successful tours for a number of years in
October to "reclaim Breast Cancer Awareness month as Cancer Industry Awareness
month." The goal is to develop stronger federal and state regulations to safeguard
our health and the health of our families, and to learn about alternative, non-polluting
compounds and how other countries produce in a cleaner way.
The Sierra Club North Star Chapter, Institute
for Agriculture & Trade Policy and the Clean Water Action Alliance were our
co-sponsors of the tour, and we invite additional community groups and individuals to
become co-sponsors and participants.
