For your information
Many times cancer will be treated with surgery. This will likely mean that you will be admitted to a hospital. Surgery can be done under local or general anesthesia and it may involve a small biopsy or it may be quite extensive.

What to pack when going to the hospital
Do take:
- A list of names and phone numbers (daytime and evening) of family or friends to be called in case of an emergency or change in your condition.
- Your medication log (especially showing those that cause allergic reaction). Otherwise, you may be given drugs that are dangerous in combination with those you already use, or you may receive too little or too much medication.
- A tape recorder to record what the doctors say and describe the care you will need after leaving the hospital.
- Creature comforts, including razors, deodorant, cosmetics, etc., that may cost more in hospitals and are not reimbursed by your insurance.
- Photos of those you love.
- A portable tape player and your favorite tapes.
- The weekly TV listings.
- An attractive visitors notebook, so that visitors can write special notes to you, even when you are sleeping or away from your room.
Do not take:
- A great deal of money or jewelry. Many people will be in and out of your room. The hospital will not assume responsibility for lost or stolen items.
Being organized while hospitalized
Here are some tips to help you stay organized:
- Jot down questions you want to ask while in the hospital.
- Mention any dietary needs to your health care providers.
- Keep a log of the treatments you experience and your doctor's visits. This will help should a problem arise with charging or paying your hospital bill.
- Keep a log of expenses for tax purposes.
- Make sure your legal and financial papers are in order.
