Standing Fast in Uncertainty: It's Time to Make a Change
This is the vision of a great and noble life:
to endure ambiguity and to make light shine through it;
to stand fast in uncertainty;
to provide capable unlimited love and hope.
-- a quote
given to the Women's Cancer Resource Center from an early supporter
who died of cancer |
In December 1992, six women who hardly knew each other gathered at the Minneapolis YWCA to discuss our experiences with cancer. We told horror stories, and stories of love and change. We fantasized about a place where women could go for support and affirmation. Inspired by AIDS activism, we envisioned being part of the growing national cancer activist movement. Our visions evolved into the Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC).
WCRC is now six years old. Our newsletter reaches 4,000 people. Hundreds of phone calls come in each month. Board members and volunteers take their message of healing to college students and medical professionals. We have support groups and bodywork programs, thanks to 200 volunteers. We've convened major environmental conferences to talk about carcinogens in our air, water and food. And now we have a new Web site -- opening doors to people we never imagined we could reach.
I have had the great fortune to be part of the birth and the growth of this remarkable organization. Yet now it is time for me to turn over the directorship of WCRC. I will continue to work with WCRC in new ways for some time to come. As of May, WCRC will have a new and dynamic leader. Please welcome and support her.
I'll leave you with a gift, a quote that was given to WCRC by an early supporter who died of cancer:
This is the vision of a great and noble life:
to endure ambiguity and to make light shine through it;
to stand fast in uncertainty;
to provide capable unlimited love and hope.
Thank you,
Barbra
